Ring seine fishery of Kerala: An overview
Among the various fishing gears employed for
pelagic schooling fishes along the Kerala coast,
seines are the most efficient. Contribution of ring
seine to total marine fish landings of Kerala has
steadily increased since its introduction during the
early eighties. It was 21.4 % in the nineties rising to
36.7 % during the period 2000-2004 and contributing
more than 50 % since then. In recent years, about
90 % of the oil sardine and about 60 % of the
mackerel landed in Kerala were caught in ring
seines. Ring seines were introduced during the early
eighties by traditional fishers of Alappuzha District
which became highly successful

Beyond the Refugee Crisis how the UK news media represent asylum seekers across national boundaries
Migration is one of the most pressing, divisive issues in global politics today, and media play a crucial role in how communities understand and respond. This study examines how UK newspapers (n = 974) and popular news websites (n = 1044) reported on asylum seekers throughout 2017. It contributes to previous literature in two important ways. First, by examining the ‘new normal’ of daily news coverage in the wake of the 2015 ‘refugee crisis’ in Europe. Second, by looking at how asylum seekers from different regions are represented. The content analysis finds significant variations in how asylum seekers are reported, including terminology use and topics they are associated with. The paper also identifies important commonalities in how all asylum seekers are represented - most notably, the dominance of political elites as sources across all media content. It argues that Entman’s ‘cascade network model’ can help to explain this, with elites in one country able to influence transnational reports
Mobility deficit – Rehabilitate, an opportunity for functionality
There are many pathological conditions that cause mobility deficits and that ultimately influence someone’s autonomy.Aims: to evaluate patients with mobility deficits functional status; to implement a Rehabilitation Nursing intervention plan; to monitor health gains through mobility deficits rehabilitation. Conclusion: Early intervention and the implementation of a nursing rehabilitation intervention plan results in health gains (direct or indirect), decreases the risk of developing Pressure Ulcers (PU) and the risk of developing a situation of immobility that affects patients’ autonomy and quality of life

Ogbu and the debate on educational achievement: an exploration of the links between education, migration, identity and belonging
This paper looks at some of the issues raised by Ogbu’s work in relation to the education of different minority ethnic groups. Ogbu poses questions such as the value attached to education,
its links to the future and its measurable outcomes in terms of ‘success’ as experienced by black participants. The desire for better life chances leads families to consider migration to a new country or resettlement within the same country, thus making migration both a local and a global phenomenon. As an example, attention is drawn to the situation facing South Asian
children and their families in the UK. In terms of ethnicity and belonging, the wider question that is significant for many countries in the West after ‘Nine-Eleven’ is the education of Muslim children. A consideration of this current situation throws Ogbu’s identification of ‘autonomous minority’ into question. It is argued that a greater understanding of diverse needs has to be
accompanied by a concerted effort to confront racism and intolerance in schools and in society, thus enabling all communities to make a useful contribution and to avoid the ‘risk’ of failure and disenchantment
New Distributional Record of Deep Sea Snake Fish Acanthocepola indica (Day, 1888) from the Southwest Coast of India
Deep sea snake fishes or band fishes belonging to the Family Cepolidae are widespread in eastern Atlantic, but rare in the central
Indo-Pacific Ocean.A specimen of Acanthocepola sp. measuring 556mmin total length (TL) weighing 139 g was collected from
a multiday trawler, operated off the southwest coast of India and landed at Beypore Fisheries harbour, Calicut, Kerala on 9th
November 2017. The species was identified as A. indicus based on morphometric and meristic characteristics which was later
confirmed by DNA barcoding
Analysis of Heat Effects on Marine Corps AM2 Mat Mechanical Properties
Navy AM2 mats are used as portable aircraft landing platforms for the Short Take-off/Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft operations. This investigation presents the study performed to determine whether the surface discoloration is a precursor to degradation in the mechanical property of the AM2 mat material. The red discoloration on the mat surfaces had a clear correlation with the decrease in yield strength, ultimate strength, and hardness properties

Fishery trends of large pelagics along the Kerala coast
The estimated average annual landings of large pelagics in Kerala during 2013 -2019 was 35678 t, which formed
about 16% of the national average landings of large pelagics of India. The average group wise contribution
during 2013-2019 was mainly by tunas (54%), billfishes (15%), seer fishes (14%) and barracudas (8%). The
peak fishery occurred during October to March with trawl nets, gill nets and hooks & lines employed. The
mechanized, motorized and traditional sectors tap the resources which have demand in the domestic as well
as export markets and a supply chain is well established. Appropriate management measures for sustainable
utilization are flagged
